Tenchfishers Book Reviews

There has been few new titles in recent years but this does not devalue the content or worth of previous publications. Not all of these titles remain in print but a good source of these books are the free ad's in Angler's Mail and Angling Times. As well as viewing titles for sale you can place wanted appeals. Don't forget the internet forum sites such as Anglersnet, FishingMagic or CEMEX. Coarse Angling Today ran a set of articles last year on Tench, back copies are likely available.

Tench - A Handbook of Techniques. Coarse Angling Today. 2009

This book published by Predator Publications in 2009 is a selection of articles about tench that originally came from the very informative Coarse Angling Today magazine. Many of the country’s most able specialist anglers have been drawn to write for this magazine over the years and their combined angling experiences and knowledge in these articles give an excellent insight into tench fishing.

We can all learn from the methods and techniques used on the many different waters by these top anglers, which makes this book an interesting book to read.

Big Tench. Bob Church. 2005

Big Tench. Bob Church. 2005

This book should be read by all those anglers who wish to improve their tench fishing.

This fascinating book includes a chapter by Bob Church, an expert all-rounder and fishing legend, together with contributions by four tench specialists: Jim Gibbinson, Keith Sanders, Peter Jackson and Dave Harman. All of the contributors reveal their skills and their passion for their craft, as well as the sheer enjoyment they gain from their sport. Written by acknowledged experts, packed full of useful information and tips, and lavishly illustrated with diagrams, and colour and black-and-white photographs, this volume is essential reading for all those who wish to improve their catches.

A Time For Tench. Chris Turnbull. 2005

We have had a long wait but finally the 80,000 word masterpiece has arrived! Packed full of information and written in the practical style that Chris always adopts with his books and articles. Two things stand out about the book. First Chris is reticent to convince anyone of his theories, it's a matter of read and see the evidence and make your mind up. If he's not sure he says so, no bullshit. Secondly you do not really need to read Chapter 2 Location because this underpins the whole approach. Chris is a nomad and will always move to find his fish if he is not already on them, which he is most of the time.

Great chapters on Big Tench Phenomenon, Location, Seasonal Movements, Tackle, Bait, Feeders, Float, Rigs and a summary" Putting All Together"

In Pursuit Of Big Tench. Len Arbery. Crowood Press. 1996

In Pursuit Of Big Tench. Len Arbery. Crowood Press. 1996

A fairly recent publication, this book presents a classic feel to pursuing the species, it could have been published in the 80's. Detailed and well prepared, it has plenty of good material but it just lacks a bit of inspiration and interest for the reviewer. Good to see a section on the care of big fish.

Fully illustrated throughout, it includes the physiology and habits of the tench, how to find the most promosing tench waters, all the tackle you need, the baits to use and a guide to effective prebaiting, tried and trusted techniques for all water types and caring for landed fish.

Success With Big Tench. Chris Turnbull. 1992

Success With Big Tench. Chris Turnbull. 1992

A This volume is still in print today. Good to see the book start with location, so often this key topic gets insufficient emphasis. Contributions from a number of leading anglers all add interest. The line drawings are excellent and the colour shots too. Content is first class.

The contributions from other anglers include: Len Arbery, Mike Davison, Roger Harker, Steve Harper, Tony Miles and Barry Snape.

This book is a David & Charles production.

Tench. Len Head. Crowood Press. 1986

Tench. Len Head. Crowood Press. 1986

A classic volume that to my mind is a reference standard publication. Excellent sections on tench distribution, characteristics, diet, behaviour, reproduction, growth and myths. Rigs are simple by todays standards but are nonetheless no less effective for that. Good analysis on water types, from pits, reservoirs, lakes and rivers.

A meticulously researched, definitive study of tench and tench fishing covering tackle and techniques on different waters throughout Britain, Ireland and the Continent.
