The legendary tench fishing at Northamptonshire's Sywell Reservoir has received a boost with a huge stocking of the species. Approaching 2000 young tench were released into the 70 acre water by the Environment Agency after being bred in the agency's Calverton fish farm. The aim is to improve the tench stock in the water where catches of specimen fish have been falling for a decade.
Tenchfishers East Midlands Regional Organiser, Dave Watson has been in discussions with Geoff Simons and staff at Sywell Country Park and the EA, about how the tench stocks might be enhanced. He has been able to make a convincing case using the group's data on catches at Sywell, which had been prepared by Records Officer Steve Webb. As a result the EA have stepped in with this significant stocking and they are to be thanked and congratulated.
"Sywell is one of the top tench fisheries in the UK, however, local anglers and members of the Tenchfishers group have reported that the fishery would benefit from a helping hand to ensure good stocks of tench remain for the future," said EA Fisheries Team member Hugh Bunker. "Northamptonshire County Council is currently working to improve habitats at Sywell and we are pleased to be able to help by providing these young fish which should breed and further increase stocks."
